General Lesson Procedures:

  1. Use the teacher-created web page Scavenger Hunt to introduce this unit to the class. 

  2. Begin the unit from text book, Chapters 1 and 2. (Harcourt Brace Social Studies, Grade 5 America’s Story)

  3. As the Unit is taught, the following technology items should be included:

ë     Students can construct PowerPoint slideshows for the different Indian groups.
You can use this TEMPLATE as a guide for students.

OR

ë     Students can construct informational brochures for the different Indian groups.

ë     Students should use the totem web page with handout to create and explain their creation of a totem pole for their family.

Culminating Activity:
Students can construct web pages to link to the sample teacher page.  These web pages will display information that has been learned about homes, trade, food, recreation, customs, beliefs, etc. of the Indian civilizations studied.  Be certain that all appropriate permissions have been gathered and posted.
This sample rubric may be used as an evaluation tool for student web pages.

Extra Activities:
Students can be directed to the Harcourt Brace website activities associated with Unit 1. 

Students may produce Indian “art”ifacts, stories, and information boards related to unit.  See samples.
