What is the English-as-a-Second Language
(ESL) Program?
The ESL Program is a federally funded program designed
to provide additional English instruction through in-class and out-of-class
support to students with a native language other than English. Henderson
County currently represents students from ten to fifteen different countries,
cultures, and languages. Teachers trained in ESL methods travel to each
school providing the needed support not only to the students but to the teachers
as well.
Who is eligible to participate in the ESL
Program?
Eligibility begins with completion of the Home Language
Survey which is part of the initial enrollment packet. If a language other
than English is indicated, a copy of this is forwarded to the ESL
Department. Permission for English language assessment is then
obtained. Assessment is conducted in English oral and written language as
well as in Reading. A student who scores Non-English Proficient or
Limited-English Proficient qualifies for ESL services.
What services are available through the ESL
Program?
To enable the success of the English-Language Learner
in the regular classroom, in-class support is provided as much as
possible. This includes one-on-one assistance within the classroom as well
as modifications of materials as needed. Translation of materials to the
native language can be provided if necessary.
