The Henderson County School System feels a responsibility to educate students socially as well as academically. Student dress is an important phase of social education.
Students should always dress appropriately for the occasion and avoid extremes in dress, cosmetics and hair styles. Students should feel a responsibility to present as good an appearance as possible in order that they may reflect credit upon themselves, their family, school, community and sponsoring organization. School officials may deal on an individual basis with dress that will interfere with the educational process or student discipline.

  1. Shorts may be worn by preschool - primary students. Short-shorts are prohibited.

  2. For students in grades 4-12 any outer garment worn below the waist must be a minimum of knee length. Form-fitting shorts, pant, and etc. are prohibited.

  3. A student should be reasonable, use good judgment and avoid distracting influences as the key to proper dress. Included in these distractions are the see-through, cut or torn articles of clothing and undergarments worn as outer wear. Styles that exaggerate, emphasize, or call attention to anatomical details shall not be worn. Strapless attire will not be permitted. Extremely tight form-fitting clothing is prohibited. Students shall wear shoes to school.

  4. No tank tops or tops that show any area of the stomach shall be worn.

  5. Extremely tight form-fitting and extremely baggy clothing is prohibited.

  6. Clothing, jewelry, buttons and other forms of ornamentation (including those containing slogans, endorsements, or commentary) are permissible except when they make distracting noises, express violence, are obscene, suggest obscenity, suggest nudity, advertise alcohol, drugs, tobacco products or call for an illegal act.

  7. Eye glasses with tinted lenses may not be worn inside the school buildings except for medical reasons attested to by permission slip issued by the principal in response to a doctor’s note with time interval indicated.

  8. This dress code is adopted in the interest of developing and maintaining a student body who is well-groomed, neat and clean. When violations of these policies become manifest, the principal or his/her representative will inform the student of the violation and instruct him or her how to correct the discrepancy. If the student then fails to conform, the principal will schedule a conference with the parent or guardian to comply with the written policy, which will result in disciplinary action.

  9. Students at the secondary level will be allowed to bring back packs/book bags to school.  All back packs/book bags must be kept in the student’s locker during the regular school day and may not be taken to class.

  10. Students shall not wear coats or jackets in the classroom. All coats or jackets must be kept in students’ lockers or stored in the designated area in each classroom.

  11. In grades P-8 visible body piercing, other than the ear, is prohibited. Tongue piercing is considered visible.

  12. In grades P-8 unnaturally colored hair to include blue, green, red, orange, purple, or a combination of these colors is prohibited.
